i'll chime in with support for nigel's statement that depth of field differs with film format. it's my understanding that this is due to the decrease in lens barrel diameter. just as aperature and focal length affect depth of field, so does lens barrel diameter. if nigel and i are mistaken, i'm willing to listen to an explanation to the contrary.

there's no decrease in diameter; we're talking about the exact same lens used with two different formats. the only reason depth of field could be different would be due to logic, such as the size of the circle of confusion. the physical properties are the same. if this wasn't true, you could increase depth of field simply by cropping your negative.

Another source for printed tables is Lipton's Independent Filmmaking. He supplies charts for 8mm, S8 & 16mm lens...

yes, mattias. my understanding was incorrect, the lens diameter does not change.
the principle holds true, however, that super8 possesses more depth of field than 16 or larger formats. this is due to the use of shorter focal lengths, as you had mentioned, in order to obtain an equivalent perspective, not due to any difference in lens diameter. i misconstrued your posts as debating that super8 did not in fact yeild more depth of field than 16mm, but i'm not understanding the point of your contention. i believe we're rationalizing the same principle in different ways, some of which (i've conceded) are incorrect; however, the principle itself still stands. to obtain an equivalent perspective on super8mm, we must utilize shorter focal lengths, and with the shorter focal lengths, we acquire more depth of field. c'est vrai. thanks for the clarification.

    Question

just found the following website.. there is a spreadsheet program to figure out dof, looking at it, it seems it should work!?
    http://www.bep.co.uk/photo/Photodepth.htm

let me know if anyone gives it a go and compares it to the book charts for spr8!
